Very insightful emails asking me to explain my thoughts in the writing of this poem. I took the definitions of black and of matter and began to express how white can’t exist with black and light can’t exist without darkness. In the simplest of terms, nothing exists without matter. It is the very essence and foundation of composition. In truth, black matter is my truth and my being.

Flowing Like Milk and Honey

You see the dark
and expect darkness
believing the black
is the pure absence of light
My heart breaks in your darkness
my brothers
and my sisters
fading in your light

I am the dark
and accept my darkness
knowing the black
is complete absorption of light
My heart aches in my darkness
oppressed in presence
false absolution that fails redemption

In your absence
you see nothing but sacrificial lamb-
ency
my glow is more radiant than your
expiring sun
too much light, unjust judge
kills
nothing lives
yet, darkness keeps unknown balance
a regal matter of
great importance
black grace is distinctly mindful,
black love is distinctly spiritual
black matter occupying space even at rest

I see the darkness
and embrace the dark
understanding that light
only exists because
of me

This poems strikes from the opening line and your ending passage brings your analysis home nicely. “My glow is more radiant than your expiring sun,” to me, this acknowledges an important influence that arrives once a person accepts and embraces their darkness instead of accommodating the sometimes systemic demands that is too much light.

That’s how I felt. Why should I ever feel uncomfortable in my God-given blessing. I had to accept the beauty of our blessing and show love where there has been so much hate. It’s a noticeable feeling now. I can feel when color matters.

Same here, I too can feel when color matters. I wish it wasn’t the case, but the truth justifies itself.

America and its troubled past, present, and future.
